Fellowship Experience

Research Fellows play an important role in the Centre for Urban Greenery & Ecology. We do our best to help our Research Fellows immerse in the CUGE community during their appointment.

Fellows are encouraged to:

• present their research within and outside CUGE
• collaborate on projects and papers
• take an active role in CUGE seminars and workshops

Our visiting Research Fellows include:

• Dr William Maynard Fountain III
  Dr Fountain, an extension professor at the Department of Horticulture of the University of Kentucky, has taken on key roles in the International Society of Arboriculture, including its vice-presidency. Dr. Fountain was awarded the CUGE Research Fellowship to study the demonstration of structural soils and soil vaults in Singapore.

• Dr Frank Sanderson
  Dr Sanderson, an experienced researcher in the field of plant diseases and plant breeding, was previously a research associate from PlantWise in New Zealand. Dr. Sanderson was awarded the CUGE Research Fellowship to carry out research on plant health. He participated in the production of the book “Tropical Gardeners’ Guide to Healthy Plants”.

• Dr Mike Behm
  Dr Behm, an Associate Professor with East Carolina University, was awarded the CUGE Research Fellowship to carry out research on safety aspects of green roofs in Singapore.

• Dr William Hunt
  Dr Hunt, an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in North Carolina State University, was awarded the CUGE Research Fellowship to study on existing Water Sensitive Urban Landscapes in Singapore and Develop a set of guidelines to enable operations staff in carrying out appropriate maintenance.
  
  
• Dr Christine Vogt
  Dr Christine Vogt is the Professor of Tourism and Recreation Studies with Michigan State University and an expert in natural resource-based tourism in national parks. She was awarded the CUGE Research Fellowship in 2013 to develop a framework to understanding Singapore's social value of parks and urban greenery.
  
  
• Sarah Ichioka
  Sarah Ichioka's diverse portfolio includes management, curatorial and editorial work with international institutions of culture, policy and research, including the London School of Economics, New York City’s Department of Housing, La Biennale di Venezia, and The Architecture Foundation (London), where she was Director from 2008-2014. She was awarded the CUGE Research Fellowship in 2015 to examine the well-being and social impacts of community growing initiatives in Singapore.
